Hello everyone. My name is Lindsey Sturgill and I am KCI’s brand new Family Involvement Specialist. Now that we have been properly introduced, I can tell you about my new job.
For the past 3 years, I have been at teacher at the Hawthorne Center in Norton, VA. In August 2010, I accepted this position and embarked on a new chapter in my life. The Family Involvement Specialist is very unique because until this past month it never existed. The one thing that sets Head Start apart from other preschool settings is family participation. KCI wanted to focus more on families, therefore, this position was born. We emphasize family support in all our centers. Not only do we want family volunteers for field trips and parties, we need families to be a voice for the needs of Head Start children. There are Family Days, formerly called parent meetings, each month in every center. Socializations with our home base families and policy council meetings are designed especially for families to let us know the needs of children and the community. The Family Involvement Specialist facilitates activities for family contribution. I assist in planning and developing trainings for families, coordinate events to enhance togetherness and assist in other ways to lend a hand. I would love to hear from you and any suggestions you may have because our best ideas will come from people who are passionate about making a difference. We are going to have a great year. Stay tuned for some upcoming events to get our families motivated and excited about being together with KCI.
